Going to the beach is good for your health

Visiting the beach is not only a great joy, but it is also beneficial in many ways. Just to mention two:

Swimming is a fantastic physical activity

Swimming helps us train almost every single part of our body at once, thus helping increase our body’s strength and stamina.

Exposure to the sun at the beach is very beneficial in many ways

The top three are;
(1), sunlight is what our body needs in order to create vitamin D. Vitamin D helps us maintain strong bones and strong immune systems.
(2), Exposure to sun and sunlight helps out the body to produce melatonin, a substance that helps us reduce stress.
(3), Finally, exposure to sunlight also helps our body to produce serotonin, a substance that helps us fight depression.

Really free help and cure for our body and soul, while having fun!

This is the positive side of the sun. Over-exposure creates problems from sunburns, which can be severe sometimes. Read further down on how to avoid the problems related to sunburns.

But to enjoy both the sea and the sun and, at the end of the day, your holidays as well, there are a few things you should consider, and even a few things you should definitely avoid.

Beach safety tips

In writing this article, I assume that you will visit a beach near your hotel or other accommodation, where you can easily go on foot or by bus.

Visit organized beaches

Organized beaches are, in general, safe. Avoid seas you don’t know as they might be dangerous. At an organized beach, you can hire umbrellas and sunbeds, but it is not obligatory, only if you want to.

Most organized beaches in Cyprus are Blue Flag beaches, which means that they offer services like change and locker rooms, toilets, lifeguards, easy access to the beach for disabled persons, etc.

If, however, despite these, you decide to go to an unknown beach, then at least ask for information about the beach at your hotel.

Avoid going into the deep sea

You will equally enjoy the sea in shallower waters and avoid, at the same time, potential dangers. After going to a reasonable water depth, like until your chest, swim parallel to the beach, not towards the deep sea.

If physically you are not very fit, then just swim casually. It is still very pleasant and beneficial.

Do not swim until at least one hour has passed since you ate. Also, please fully avoid alcoholic beverages before swimming.

Do not enter the sea if it is wavy. There are areas where dangerous sea currents appear when the sea is rough or stormy. In cases like these enjoy sunbathing and games on the sand.

In dangerous waters never swim contra to a sea current. Mother Nature is very powerful and, unfortunately, unforgiving. Swimming contra to the sea current, you will never win. The only thing you will manage this way is to waste your powers and you will get exhausted, getting yourself into danger. If you find yourself in a condition like this, swim with the current even if it takes you away from the shore, and ask for help.

Enjoy the sun carefully

If you do not protect yourself from sunburns, you might end up with a problem serious enough to destroy your holidays. This is why you must enjoy the sun while treating it with respect.

Sunscreen to avoid sunburnsTake precautions for sunburns

A sunburn is not something to take lighthearted, as it is something that can really ruin your holidays. Also, it is very easy to get sunburnt before you even notice it, so be very careful.

Ideally, you should not go to the beach in the middle of the day, when the sun is almost vertical above you, between 11+30 and 3+30. But I believe that many of you will ignore this and go, so take very serious sun protection during these hours

  • Use sunscreen with high protection against UV rays. Apply it regularly.

  • Use high sun protection sunscreen, with SPF between 30 and 50. SPF stands for sun protection factor. The bigger the number, the bigger the protection of the sunscreen against the harmful rays from the sun. SPF 50 means the sunscreen protects you from about 98% of the harmful sun rays. SPF 30 protects from more than 96% of the harmful sun rays.

  • Use umbrella, hat, and eyeglasses. Wear hats and eyeglasses even in the sea. Try to avoid direct exposure to the sun. Even under an umbrella, you will tan.

  • You need sunscreen in the water as well

  • Lips get sunburned too, so apply a lip balm that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher

In the case of a sunburn use a lot of cream against burns. Apply it many times on the affected areas, during the first 2-3 hours. Creams for burns are cheap and you can find them at any pharmacy.

Few general tips

If, by accident, you press a sea urchin
Prevention is always better: In Cyprus, sea urchins are stuck on the rocks in the sea, and there are no urchins that sit on the sand. So if you avoid sea rocks there is no possibility to step on a sea urchin. If, anyway, you do press an urchin, then seek medical help as soon as possible. I assure you that pressing the urchin will be very painful, so do your best to avoid it :)

Take with you water and snacks. On the beach, you will pay for them very expensive.

A list of the minimum things you must take with you to the beach

Taking these with you means that you have everything you need to enjoy the beach. Additional things can be useful but are not necessary.

  1. Towels, sunscreens, hats, and eyeglasses
Your weapons to make the sun your friend, not an enemy.

  2. Water and snacks
If you plan to stay for many hours on the beach take them with you. Also any necessary medicines.

  3. MINIMUM cash
Take with you just a few euros for things like hiring an umbrella and sunbed if you want to.

  4. DO NOT TAKE WITH YOU: expensive watches and jewelry, credit cards, or lots of cash. Cyprus is in general a very safe place to be, but it is always better to take some very basic precautions and not to provoke your luck.

Hope that this helps. So just do these easy yet necessary things and enjoy the sea, the sun, and your holidays!
